Our Favorite Seed Sources
In The dead of winter when the world lays bare, all one can do is dream for the season ahead and the beauty to come- The colors and textures and scents of spring and summer beckon us to look ahead with hopeful anticipation.
If you’re feeling the same excitement over the coming season as us, now is the time to channel that energy into planning your garden for the 2025 season. In this blog, you’ll find some of our favorite seed sources, as well as some bonus resources like customizable garden layouts and planting schedules!
Johnny’s Selected Seeds
Established in 1973, Johnny’s is a one-stop shop for farmers and gardeners alike. Their product quality is top-notch, with many tried-and-true as well as newly-bred seed varieties available. Not only does johnny’s have one of the widest selections of both cut flower and vegetable seeds, with many certified organic options, They’re also a wealth of knowledge for new (and tenured) gardeners! Browse their abundant selection of seeds, then make sure to give their Grower’s Library a look. Some of our favorite seeds to source from Johnny’s are Snapdragon and sunflower seeds (and if you’re a more experienced gardener, I’d highly recommend checking out the beautiful, unique varieties of lisianthus they have to offer!).
Redemption Seeds
Incredible selection and quality paired with the most wonderful customer service makes Redemption Seeds another of our favorite seed sources! While they don’t have as many varieties and resources as Johnny’s, they do boast some more unique varieties which I always lose myself browsing through (and buying way too many of). We especially love the unique delphinium, foxglove, and rudbeckia varieties they offer- they’re absolutely dreamy!
Farmhouse Flower Farm
Located in Washington state and shipping nationwide, Farmhouse flower farm is perfection in every way. The owner, Marryn, not only grows the most beautiful cut flower varieties, but harvests and packs all of the seeds herself with the help of her family, as well as her extensive selection of pristine dahlia tubers (you do not want to miss her tuber sale). She is a wonderwoman, and clearly my role model. She sells the most beautiful varieties of sweet peas I’ve ever seen, and is so talented that she’s written a book all about growing them. If you’re looking to get started in cut flowers this year, I cannot recommend farmhouse flower farm enough. Their selections are curated enough that you won’t get overwhelmed by options, but you won’t be lacking in beautiful options to choose from.
Floret
While they aren’t selling seeds in the 2025 season, I’d be remiss if I neglected to acknowledge Floret. The owner, Erin, is one of the most giving and inspirational humans in the flower world and beyond, and she’s put so much work into the beautiful business that floret now is. They formerly sold nearly as many varieties as Johnny’s, but have since switched gears to focus on breeding zinnias, celosia, and dahlias. They’re not selling any of their seeds this year, but their newly-bred varieties will be available again someday soon- we hope, at least. While they aren’t selling seeds this year, their website is still a wealth of knowledge for flower growers, with growing resources, a digital library of flowers they’ve trialed and documented, free mini-courses- oh, and she’s written three books (they’re all amazing). Keep an eye out for when Floret original seeds return- it’ll be so worth it.
Flowers From 12th
Us? yes! Did you know we harvest and package seeds harvested right from our very own farm for you to grow in your own gardens at home? We can’t boast the most selection like some of the other sources listed or the most unique varieties known to man, but we can offer locally-grown, lovingly-packaged seeds from flowers that we love and would love to share with you! Most of the varieties we offer are seed mixes, since we don’t grow at a scale where we can isolate varieties from cross-pollinating, which means that the flowers you grow from our seed will all be unique, new versions of beloved classics! We’ve personally enjoyed growing out our own calendula, celosia, and cosmos mixes and experiencing all of Interesting colors and forms that emerge. Some of our other favorite seeds from our own collection are Cress, feverfew, and frosted explosion grass- all of which were harvested and packed with the help of our children (and heavy supervision from me, of course).
